Instant (and Easy!) Teacher Win: Expanding Sentences!

Hi there!

The end of the year is a lot. Countdowns on the board (I actually have big feelings about this, but we'll chat about that later), restless energy in the air, and somehow we still need to keep the learning going. Ha! It's quite the task.

Oftentimes, I see teachers use this time of year to have students write their LONGEST, most extravagant and perfect piece of writing yet... But... I'm going to be super honest, even if it's a little bit unpopular.

That's a LOT to ask of kids as the school year clock ticks down. This is exactly why I love this Expanding Sentences activity. It's low-prep, engaging, can be used in a ton of different ways, is easy to personalize, and keeps kids happy!

πŸ“Έ Here's how it works: Students look at a high-interest picture, write a simple sentence about it, and then use a guided template to expand it into something way more descriptive and interesting. We're talking vivid verbs, specific nouns, descriptive adjectives, and details that answer where, when, and why/how. The pictures keep students hooked and the writing shows quick improvement.

πŸ“Έ Need a more in depth lesson? Here's a peek at my board while I'm teaching this and a sample that we do BEFORE moving on to pictures.

It's messy, but it's such a good representation of the process we go through as I teach the lesson!

πŸ“Έ Why Teach Expanding Sentences Right Now? This time of year is when this lesson shines the most. Kids are burned out on long writing pieces and routines that have begun to feel stale. Something this visual and open-ended that allows for creativity is just what they need.

I love that there's no right or wrong answer when you're describing a picture, which means lower stress for students. It's also a great way to show off how much their writing has grown since September, which feels really good for everyone heading into the last stretch.

πŸ“Έ Keep It Going: I'm not going to lie... this time of year, I like to extend things for the sake of ease as long as I can! This activity is so great for that. Here is how you can keep the writing fun going.

⭐⭐ Bring Student Photos In: Once students get the hang of expanding sentences using the included pictures, have them bring in a photo from home β€” a vacation snapshot, a birthday party, a picture of their pet β€” and use the same template to write about something that actually matters to them. Those personal pictures spark amazing sentences, and it usually turns into full stories before you know it.

Here are some more ideas for using pictures and expanded sentences!

1. Turn expanded sentences into mini books. Students pick their favorite picture and expanded sentence, then add a few more sentences to build it into a short illustrated story they can keep.

2. Do a gallery walk. Post student sentences around the room and have classmates leave sticky note compliments pointing out their favorite vivid detail. Great for community building in the last weeks.

3. Use it as a memory book page (THIS IS MY FAVORITE!). Have students expand a sentence about a favorite school memory from the year (bonus points if you have pictures of them). Compile them into a class memory book to send home on the last day.

4. Let students be the teachers. A classic! Have each student share their expanded sentence and explain one choice they made, like why they picked a specific verb or added a detail about when. It builds metacognitive skills and gives every kid a moment to shine before summer.

Happy (almost) summer!
